Artist Statement (June 2011)

Being a self-taught artist born in The Netherlands and now living close to Calgary, I have been creating paintings since 2007. Meanwhile I have attended abstract painting classes at the Alberta College of Art and Design. Most all of my paintings are on canvas using acrylics and mixed mediums. The paintings are abstract, often related to nature and mostly very colourful.

Because I am intrigued by the power and energy of nature my current work explores themes as Glaciers, Ice, Environment and the consequences (e.g. erosion, muddy residue’s) to the environment. The style of my paintings is very specific because I use Minimalism together with the Impasto technique. This results in paintings with colourful presence and tension because of the use of one basic color together with thick layers of paint and mediums.

My curiosity, education and experience drive me to continue exploring the theme of energy of nature and the different ways to use the combined technique of Minimalism and Impasto.
